Spritelings

On the tenth day of Splintered, we follow a tiny band of glimmering bubbles to a clearing in Wonderland where mushrooms, glassy with ice, loom the size of truck tires. Tiny giggles and voices leak out from the bubbles as they bust … and we realize we’re in the company of sprites. They take their place on a cove of snow-capped firs, dotting the branches like lit candles. It’s a beautiful sight, until they hiss and snarl in a rabid descent from the trees like a glimmering hailstorm

Before they can pelt our skin, Morpheus appears, a sweep of black wings and licorice-scented smoke. The spritelings fall to the ground at his feet, penitent for their naughty behavior. Playing the part of a gentleman, he sweeps his cape aside and bows. In his hand is a peace offering for us—a sprite captured within a jar. She whimpers, bound within the chains of his blue magic.

Our trip to Splintered’s Wonderland has almost come to a close, but first, we must visit Alyssa’s everyday world, because it also has cryptic ties to Lewis Carroll’s tale. So take the weekend off and relax. Then follow us on Monday to the next stop at Jennifer Daiker’s, back to the human realm for some insight into what makes Alyssa a heroine worth rooting for.
